Tim Cook drops a huge hint about Apple’s future AR/VR headset

Apple has always been interested in augmented reality and virtual reality. And if, as usual, the firm hardly ever mentions its plans, various patents and acquisitions that it has made in recent years suggest that a product is under development.

Apple is rumored to be launching its first headset combining virtual reality and augmented reality either at the end of the year or in early 2023. Recently, for example, analyst Ming Chi Kuo discussed the roadmap of the apple brand for the launch of this brand new product category.

According to the analyst, the EVT or engineering verification test of the helmet would take place from the third quarter of 2022. Then, an event would be organized by Apple in January 2023 to present the product. And the dev kits would be distributed 2-4 weeks after this event. Then, pre-orders would start in the second quarter of 2023 and the helmet would be marketed before the WWDC 2023 conference (normally, in June).

An imminent launch?

Of course, for the moment, the information mentioned by Ming Chi Kuo is for the moment to be considered with caution. Nevertheless, it seems that Apple is indeed preparing the launch of its first virtual reality and augmented reality headset. This month of June, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, also dropped a clue, during an interview with the China Daily, on the occasion of the WWDC 2022 conference.

The Chinese media reporter asked Cook what elements would make an augmented reality product a commercial success.

“I’m incredibly excited about AR, as you may know, and the key in any technology, including AR, is to put humanity at the center of it. That’s what we focus on every day.”replied the CEO of Apple.

He also recalled that Apple already offers ARKit, a tool allowing developers to create augmented reality applications for the iPhone and iPad, and indicated that ARKit is used by 14,000 applications, which are used by millions of people.

When it comes to augmented reality technology, Cook also explained that it’s still in its infancy. Then he said: “I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities in this space. Stay tuned and you’ll see what we have to offer. »

Tim Cook remained ambiguous, but it’s a safe bet that the CEO of Apple was referring to the future AR / VR headset that Apple is developing, and which has been talked about by the media for years. This headset is rumored to combine virtual reality and augmented reality well, thanks to high-definition screens on the inside and cameras on the outside. It should also be a high-end product, and operate independently (no need to be connected to a computer), since it would be equipped with a processor as powerful as that of a Mac.

In any case, the competition will be fierce since among the main competitors of Apple in the field of AR / VR, there will be Meta. Mark Zuckerberg’s company already has products on the market, and it spends lavishly to develop new technologies.

In 2021, Meta’s Reality Mabs division spent over $10 billion. And recently, this one showed its muscles by presenting four prototypes used in research on futuristic technologies that will arrive on commercial products in a few years.
