Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is already one of the smartest cities in the world. Over 95% of its residents have 4G and 5G access, and the city has free Wi-Fi at over 100,000 hotspots. The city is now considering building a metaverse across all sections of city government. This city-wide metaverse ecosystem is known as “Metaverse Seoul”.
The project leverages digital twins, virtual reality and collaboration with the aim of improving city services, planning and administration, as well as promoting virtual tourism in the city.
The development of the Metaverse Seoul ecosystem is already underway. Users can already create avatars on the platform and explore a virtual recreation of the mayor’s office.
The city’s long-term vision for the metaverse ecosystem is to integrate support for business development services, education, and provide support for city services, including filing complaints, requests information on real estate and tax declaration. The city administration hopes to make the metaverse an open and free service for citizens.
The city says the project aims to make it easier for residents to connect with government services and each other. The project also aims to overcome time, space and language constraints. Finally, through the metaverse ecosystem, the city aims to explore new ways to improve user satisfaction and experience.
The metaverse platform aims to help consolidate access to services in the city. The platform will also allow the city to easily simplify and expand services that leverage 3D digital twins to improve city public infrastructure, report fires, and improve access to local safety images.
There is, for example, an S-Map service with a digital twin for real-time fire monitoring, urban planning as well as wind path analysis. The platform also has a security service, Ansimi App, which connects users to Seoul police departments and police can then leverage camera feeds and location data to speed up investigations.
The team has a five-year plan to increase the platform’s capabilities in a number of key areas. The Metaverse Seoul ecosystem already offers a business services portal that provides startups with a place in the metaverse where they can showcase new business ideas as well as services.
There is also an education portal with 34 campus cities that provide coaching, networking, and collaboration opportunities.
There is virtual tourism that local and international tourists can tap into to sample current and historic attractions.
In the future, Metaverse Seoul will also have infrastructure to support major festivals and museum exhibitions in the city.
Many big players in the metaverse are already thinking of it as a future workplace and this project also wants to integrate virtual coworking spaces that will allow citizens of the city to work remotely in this metaverse as they currently do in a real office.
Going forward, the projects want to add an “AI-powered civil servant” who will work in a metaverse office and work closely with others to deliver public services, according to CIO Jong-Soo Park of the City’s Policy Office. Seoul Smart City.
