A unique immersive learning experience for students

It was a first for the students of 3e year of the Bachelor Tourism & Hospitality Management. The second session of their course Standards and certifications in the hotel industry took place equipped with virtual reality headsets and immersed in the universe of the asynchronous Metaverse “ Red Alert ! “. At the controls of a luxury hotel complex, they face a serious incident (the drowning of a client) and must coordinate a response to the crisis in compliance with the regulations and intervention procedures previously studied in progress. Captured by particularly realistic graphics and immersed in an atmosphere where the stress inherent in a crisis situation reigns, the students have the task of coordinating the intervention, in the skin of the manager. Based on the scenario designed by the Excelia teaching team, they are faced with choices. Thanks to virtual reality, they interact with the various actors (hotel staff and customers, rescuers, etc.), move around the hotel complex and are confronted with decision-making. A sequence of lessons that has won great enthusiasm among the students.

Pedagogical sequences that complement face-to-face lessons with relevance

The integration of Metaverses in Excelia courses pursues the objective of giving students experiences that they cannot achieve either in class or in internship. Operationally managing a serious crisis is an opportunity they rarely encounter in their learning situations. However, they must be prepared to face them. This is the opportunity offered by this Metaverse “ Red Alert ! “. Students are introduced to the implementation of an intervention procedure. Thanks to virtual reality, they are in a position of responsibility and develop “ doing “, operational skills, like those covered by “ Red Alert » :

  • Assess the seriousness of an incident to appropriately trigger an emergency plan (called Code Rouge/Red Alert),
  • Apply the coordination steps of the procedure “ code red » in accordance with a QHSE management approach (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment),
  • Communicate adequate information to employees under stress,
  • Coordinate a post-crisis response appropriate to the severity and consequences of the incident.

An exercise carried out by small groups which is part of a pedagogical progression

The Metaverses offered by Excelia enrich the pedagogical palette available to teachers and are part of a pedagogical progression. Performed in groups of 4 to 16 students, the sequence “ Red Alert comes after a theoretical course of 21 hours on the Standards and certifications in the hotel industry and before a Master Class. The latter is intended to make students think about the interest of standards and intervention procedures for a responsible manager.

The pedagogical added value of this exercise is significant. The data collected during the immersive experience allows us to analyze the reflexes and errors made by the students. The ensuing discussion with them is thus fed by factual data and no longer by the mere intuition of their understanding that we had until now. An achievement as part of the deployment of the XL Vision digital transformation plan
