News JVTech Feeling the metaverse is now possible thanks to this new technology
Today the metaverse is often singled out for its lack of realism, resulting in suboptimal immersion for its users. With this new technology to smell odors in the virtual world, it could well take another turn.
The experimentation of the senses in a totally virtual world was for the moment confined to Hollywood science fiction films such as Ready Player One. However, today the synopsis is getting closer and closer to reality.
On the occasion of the CES technology fair in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8, the American company OVR presented a surprising virtual reality headset. This allows you to really smell the smells of the virtual world!
The scent technology comes in the form of a virtual reality headset accessory. The rectangular object attaches under the VR headset and allows smells to be diffused up to the user’s nose. These chemical scents trigger automatically based on your avatar’s location in the digital environment.
To test the helmet, some were able to experience virtual camping by smelling the smoke of a totally digital campfire with a slight smell of roasted marshmallow.
One more step towards the Internet of the senses
This initiative brings us a little closer to the concept of “Internet of the senses”. Presented as a revolution for the next few years, this term is defined by the immersion of our 5 senses in digital technology. Concretely, the final objective is to physically feel our virtual experiences for maximum realism.
At the moment, the most developed senses in the digital world are sight and hearing. Thus, many companies strive to integrate touch, taste or even smell into the digital world. In this logic, the Internet of the senses seems to be the track to be exploited so that the metaverse gains in consistency and interest. According to OVR, the sense of smell is an essential part to develop since this sense calls precisely on memory and recollections – enough to remember one’s passage through the metaverse.
In addition, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, which has embarked on the project of a universal metaverse, is actively working on the subject. Through the research and development body Meta Reality Labs, the group has been testing haptic gloves for more than a year that can reproduce the sensation of touch.
Coupled with other technologies, the OVR accessory could give way to confusing experiences in the metaverse. The previous year, an American research institute developed a VR headset accessory to reproduce the touch of lips.
Thus, all that remains is to look into the taste to be able to enjoy its first meal in the metaverse – even if for the moment, the development of this sense seems to have lagged behind the others.
