Cinema – Why the virtual reality programming at the Clermont Short Film Festival remains the best in France

Reservations for the VR workshop, set up on the first floor of the Comédie, in Clermont-Ferrand, during the Short Film Festival, are going like hotcakes.
Year after year, virtual reality confirms the enthusiasm it arouses and Clermont positions itself very clearly on the subject. “We have, during the festival, the best programming in France,” affirms Sébastien Duclocher, coordinator of the education center for images within Sauve qui peut le court film. Annecy, which specializes in animation, Biarritz in documentaries, and Paris, which favors quantity, are below.

1,500 slots

The system, supported by Festivals connexion in particular, is also the largest in France, with ten helmets at the Comédie, around twenty at the Atelier, the ephemeral school of cinema installed at the Blaise-Pascal center, and some 1,500 slots offered to the public during the week.
Sébastien Duclocher feels the enthusiasm of professionals who have come to the film market. They alone reserve 40% of the sessions. Among them, 40% foreigners.

For this demanding audience, you might as well bet on the top of what is being done at the moment in terms of virtual reality. We therefore find, in the programming of ten films, Bodyless, seen last year, which Sébastien considers “the best VR film to date”. Note that it is a Taiwanese film among five in total. The country is not only in the spotlight this year but also in the forefront of VR at the international level.

Reservations. Since the beginning of the festival, reservations are only taken on site, on the first floor of the Comédie, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., until February 3 (10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on February 4). Free on presentation of a festival ticket or accreditation.

For the rest of the programming, we can classify the short films into three categories. “Technically simple” films but which arouse a lot of emotion. LikeShowcase, touching immersion in a women’s prison in Italy. Then “fun” films, according to Sébastien Duclocher who willingly quotes Kidnapping in Vostokin which you are held hostage by Russian scientists.

Finally, “spectacular” shorts, such as On the morning you wake, “highly anticipated in Clermont”, the true story of an alert sent to the inhabitants of Hawaii in 2018: the island is threatened by a ballistic missile. Run!
