WhatsApp launches its proxy servers to allow users to connect where the internet is censored

The Meta messaging application is today launching a new feature to help people whose Internet access is censored or even completely cut off. These are proxy servers to allow users to access WhatsApp even when they don’t have internet access.

WhatsApp kicks off the year 2023 by launching a practical and above all essential feature for many people around the world. For the new year, the messaging application is launching a service of proxy servers that can be accessed anywhere in the world today.

This novelty is announced in a blog post in which WhatsApp presents its wishes for 2023. The app states: “Today we are launching a proxy server service for people using WhatsApp around the world. We thus allow everyone to access WhatsApp, even in the event of an interruption in Internet access”.

Give access to WhatsApp where internet is censored or cut off

If in France, and in many countries of the world, it is possible to use the Internet freely to go on social networks or contact relatives, it is almost impossible to do so in several regions of the world.

This is particularly the case in Iran where the internet has been cut off for several months now following demonstrations by the people denouncing the death of Mahsa Amini, or even in Armenia where the Nagorno-Karabakh region is the victim of a blockade by Azerbaijan. But other countries are also affected by internet shutdowns or censorship, which is why WhatsApp allows users in these regions to access the application through proxy servers.

These last are “configured by volunteers and organizations around the world dedicated to enabling everyone to communicate freely” says WhatsApp on its blog. You therefore have the possibility of configuring a proxy yourself or of joining one already created.

The advantage of a connection via proxy is the provision of a high level of confidentiality and security, and end-to-end encryption on conversations is always in the game. In this way, the exchanges are only visible by the interlocutors and inaccessible to other users, or even proxy servers, specifies WhatsApp.

How to access WhatsApp Proxy?

As we explained above, you have the choice between creating your own proxy or joining an already created proxy. In both cases, you will need to install the latest WhatsApp update on your device.

To create a proxy, you will need to configure it on a server using the available ports 80, 443 or 5222 and add a domain name (or subdomain) that points to the server’s IP address. WhatsApp details all the information about GitHub. Once the proxy is created, it will need to be shared privately to users living in countries where the internet is censored or cut off so that they can freely access the messaging app.

And for people who need to join a proxy to access WhatsApp, just go to the app in Settings > Storage and data > Proxy > Use proxy. Once this option is activated, you will need to enter the address of the proxy you wish to join.

The proxy access method is different from iOS to Android, but WhatsApp details each step according to your device in its support page.
