WhatsApp instant messaging app adds a new feature that will allow users to access the service through a proxy server in order to circumvent Internet blocks (sometimes imposed by the government of certain countries).
WhatsApp adds proxy support
Before continuing, what is a proxy and what is it used for? A proxy is an intermediary that stands between your device (smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.) and your Internet connection. When you use a proxy, your Internet requests are first sent to the proxy, which then retrieves the requested information and sends it back to you. In such cases, a proxy can be particularly useful in helping users access a service otherwise difficult or impossible to reach due to government censorship, as is currently the case in Iran. So, thanks to this feature, it is finally possible to connect to WhatsApp in countries where the messaging application is censored by the government.
Proxy servers are often set up by organizations dedicated to helping people communicate securely. To connect to a proxy server via WhatsApp, open the WhatsApp application and go to Settings > Storage and data > Proxy and add a proxy. If the proxy has not been blocked, a green tick will appear, indicating that you can now use WhatsApp through the proxy in question. On the other hand, if you have the possibility of helping other people to connect, you can learn how to configure a proxy by clicking on this linkwrites WhatsApp.
Here is what WhatsApp says:
“We hope that in 2023, cuts in Internet access will no longer exist. In Iran, these cuts, which have been occurring for several months, violate human rights by preventing the population from receiving urgent aid. In the event that these outages continue, we hope this solution will help everyone access reliable and secure communication. »
It is important to note that when you use a proxy to connect to WhatsApp, your messages and calls are always end-to-end encrypted. So the proxy provider won’t be able to see the content of your messages or listen to your private calls (also valid for WhatsApp and Meta), but the proxy servers may be able to see your IP address, which can in this case reveal your geographic location.
The new feature is currently available on iOS, Android and also the desktop WhatsApp app version. But you must make sure you have the latest version of the application installed on your device.
