No, the pizza box in response to Greta Thunberg did not lead to the arrest of Andrew Tate

The Romanian prosecutor in charge of the investigation denies to “CheckNews” the information that a pizza box would have betrayed the location of the kickboxer put in his place by the Swedish environmental activist.

Social media star, British kickboxer Andrew Tate has drawn ridicule from the global web after being shriveled on Twitter by famed environmental activist Greta Thunberg. Believing to be clever by provoking the Swedish activist to send him the list of his many cars, the man tasted the repartee of the 19-year-old Swede, who advised him to write to him at smalldickenergy@getalife.com (which would give in French: “energiedepetitebite@achettoiunevie.com”). A response that was celebrated by millions of likes, Internet users too happy to see the young woman beat down the cackle of the brute, already known for her misogynistic escapades. The latter had also earned him an exclusion from the social network Twitter (before the news moderation policy implemented by Elon Musk not allow him to return).

But the case does not stop there, since Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested this Thursday by the Romanian police in a case of human trafficking. Many media like DailyMail, RTL Where Free lunch claimed that this arrest had been made possible thanks to a stupidity of Andrew Tate.

Responding to Greta Thunberg’s reply, Andrew Tate posted a video in which a pizza box appears, covered with inscriptions in Romanian. This clue would have allowed the Romanian courts to identify that the two brothers were on Romanian soil and would have led to their arrest. The conclusion of a (too) beautiful story that has been widely shared on social networks by Internet users reveling in this turnaround.

Contacted by CheckNews, Romanian prosecutor Bolla Ramona, in charge of the investigation, however formally denies that it was Andrew Tate’s pizza box that led to his arrest: “It’s very funny information but it’s not true. We executed a search warrant yesterday but the decision had already been made before his message [avec la boîte à pizza]then it was cleared by a judge.” The prosecutor indicates that five searches took place on Thursday and that the police had assured that the two brothers [étaient] in Romania before acting. We use all kinds of information, such as those in public sources, but they are not the only ones employed”.

Investigation started in April 2022

In a press release published Thursday, December 29, the Romanian Directorate for Investigations of Organized Crime and Terrorism had confirmed the arrest and detention for 24 hours of four people, including two British citizens, in an important property in Romania. Those arrested are suspected of having sequestered women, of having “sexually exploited […] by forcing them to engage in pornographic acts with a view to producing and disseminating this material through social media platforms”, as well as rape. This police operation follows an investigation already begun in April 2022. At the time, two women (including a United States citizen) had been found kidnapped in the Tate brothers’ villa, after a report from a former boyfriend. The Tate brothers had not been arrested at the time.

The press release published by the Romanian authorities is accompanied by a video which reveals the police operation and whose blurred images make it possible to identify one of the Tate brothers. At no time does Greta Thunberg’s name appear in this press release.

If many Anglo-Saxon newspapers have highlighted the role of Greta Thunberg’s communication in this police operation, the Romanian press never mentions it. “Sources say these searches are happening today because prosecutors wanted to make sure the brothers are in the country so they can participate in the searches,” just report the Observer, the Antena 1 television news bulletin.

“The good moment”

On social media, a demonstration of the arrest by the pizza box has been shared more than 90,000 times. The Internet user behind these messages says he relies on an article in Romanian from the media Gandul, of which a translation appears. But this news site never mentions the Swedish activist. He only notes that since April, “Anti-Mafia prosecutors have collated all the evidence collected from the Tate brothers’ villa and video chat studio to prove that the allegations made by their alleged victims during the hearings were true” and “Sources close to the investigation told Gandul that soon after the computer expertise was completed, the authorities waited for the right moment to catch the Tate brothers, who were out of the country most of the time”.

Even before Andrew Tate posted a video showing a pizza box in Romanian, the rude kickboxer had shared a video on Twitter with the caption “Romania”, Sunday, December 25. On December 26, he was filming himself in an airport. In the days that followed, he shared a video showing him on an airport tarmac, ready to board a private jet with a clearly recognizable tail number.

Andrew Tate’s personal address in Romania is also really not complicated to find: just type Andrew Tate on Google Maps to find his home in the Pipera district of Bucharest.
