1. Place your box in the right place

Did you know that depending on where your box is placed, your connection can be better?

4 tips to know:

👉 Place your box in the center of your home or near the equipment that uses wifi the most,

👉 The ideal is to place it in heighton a small piece of furniture, about 1 meter above the ground in an open space,

👉To avoid interference, keep it away from metal or glass objects if possible. and of certain electronic devices (microwave, baby monitor, etc.),

👉 Switch off your decoder if you are not using it not in order to free up bandwidth on wifi.

And of course, when you’re at home, connect your smartphones and tablets to wifi so you don’t waste your data and benefit from a better connection.
(unless you are too many to be connected to a wifi that picks up badly).

  • 2. Download the videos (rather than streaming them)

Fancy a little movie night under the duvet? Or share a video by showing it to a loved one? When possible, prefer download videos over wifi instead of stream them (you will thus avoid possible cuts, very annoying, in passing).

On video streaming services, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney, you can download the films and series of your choice to watch them afterwardsoffline.

3. Lower the quality of videos (when watching them from your phone)

When watching a video on the Internet, from your smartphone or tablet, you can choose to lower video quality. Don’t worry, your video will still show up great…and you’ll gain connection.

So why is that? Because some screens still cannot read high definition content, in 4K for exampleso no need to enable it.

☝️ How to reduce the quality? Example with YouTube:

→ Open your YouTube video from your smartphone or tablet, then tap once on the image,
→ Appear, at the top right of the image, 3 small dots aligned vertically.
Tap on it, then on “quality” and choose the one that suits you.

4. Download your favorite playlists and albums to your music streaming app

Same principle as for video streaming.

Do you regularly listen to certain titles, albums or even playlists on Spotify or Deezer? If you download them, you can listen to them from anywhere (even from a campsite with poor reception on vacation), without interruption and while maintaining a good wifi connection if you are at home!

☝️ Bonus Tip : to gain connection quality while maintaining quality sound, suitable for small devices, you can adjust the sound quality of your music streaming application (such as Deezer or Spotify).

5. Test multiparty calls

When your child is in a difficult game of online games or solving a super complicated math problem, it is better to avoid drama and preserve the quality of the wifi connection.

We therefore avoid making a video call to a loved one at this moment (the advantage: by putting on headphones, our hands are freed and we can take advantage of it to do something else, such as cooking, writing the address on this envelope that we have had to post for 2 weeks…).

Ditto when you want to talk to several people: on the phone, you can make three-way calls by “add a call” from his mobile.

6. Play, ok, but not all the time

Does your child, spouse, parent or yourself love online games? We also understand! On the other hand, it is important to know how to disconnect. Already, because it is important for health. And also, because these games consume a lot of bandwidth.

With family, avoid playing when another member needs a good connectionas for a job interview (for the job of his dreams) remotely, to preserve the quality of the image and sound.

7. Disable automatic updates (and video launches)

Do you have a very important presentation to make on Zoom and many of you are connected? Now is not the time for your devices to eat up wifi by doing automatic cloud transfers, or automatic mobile app downloads and updates.

The top? Run them manually at off-peak hoursso as not to disrupt telecommuting or entertainment-type uses during the day.

☝️ Bonus Tip : Disable Facebook’s autoplay function. It launches videos automatically when you hover over them and consumes an impressive amount of data. So see you in the Settings then Videos and Photos to deactivate Autoplay or allow it only when the smartphone is connected to wifi.

8. When I telework, I adopt the right reflexes

So that you and your colleagues benefit from a better connection, think of you disconnect from their company’s VPN when doing other things. Employees generally use their company’s Virtual Private Network to telecommute and leave it plugged in all day. In reality, it should be turned off when the contact is not necessary.

Are you in a place where the wifi network is bad?

In the countryside, on the train, you can use connection sharing in these cases.

To avoid unpleasant surprises, monitor your consumption from time to time. Most smartphones allow you to track the consumption of each application.
On iPhones, go to Settings then Cellular network. For Android, it will be Settings then Wireless and Networks and Data usage. Finally, on the Windows Phone, you have to go to Data Wizard and swipe the screen to the right.
