IPHONE 14. The shutdown of the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China should lead to a production shortfall of 6 million iPhones for Apple. In France, delivery times are getting longer.
[Mise à jour 29 novembre 2022 à 17h57] It’s already too late to find an iPhone 14 Pro under the tree. On the site ofApple, delivery times are getting longer on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, the most popular models among those released in September by Apple. No delivery is possible before December 29th. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, which are less successful, are still available for delivery within two hours in major cities.
The extension of these delivery times is due to the shutdown of production at the main Foxconn factory based in Zhengzhou, China. The factory campus called iPhone City ships 70% of Apple’s smartphones worldwide, including the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, and has seen violent protests between its employees and Chinese police after a mid-October lockdown. According to BloombergApple and Foxconn estimate that 6 million units will not be produced, but believe they can catch up by 2023. Evercore ISI analysts estimate them that the loss would be 5 to 8 million units over the last quarter with a negative impact on the company’s revenues in the amount of 5 to 8 billion dollars.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max sit alongside the iPhone 14 and a new large format: the iPhone 14 Plus. Apple presented four new iPhones during its keynote on September 7, 2022. Among the expected new features, the always-on screen will equip the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. This technology, already available on Android smartphones or on the Apple Watch Series 5, allows the display of widgets, such as the weather or data from the Health app even when the screen is locked. The locked screen therefore remains visible and can be viewed at a glance. On the other hand, when the smartphone is down or deep in a pocket, it darkens to preserve the battery. These always-on LTPO screens display an adaptive refresh rate varying from 1 to 120 Hz against a variation of 10 to 120 Hz on the previous ones iPhone 13 Pro. It is this difference that allows the smartphone to consume almost no energy when the always-on mode is active.
Alongside the always-on screen, one of the big new features of the iPhone 14 Pro is its new notch around the front camera called dynamic island. It combines new hardware and software to enable the display of information. This modular notch presents the music listened to, the Airpods used and the FaceTime calls in progress among others. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max include the most significant new features: Apple intends to better distinguish its ranges and highlight the Pro ranges at higher prices and therefore more profitable for the Apple brand.
The price of the iPhone 14
While the speakers during Apple’s presentation did point out that iPhone prices did not increase between 2021 and 2022, this only applies to the US market. It will be necessary to pay at least more than 1,000 euros in France to acquire a brand new iPhone 14. In France, iPhone prices are affected by the economic context and the fall in the euro against the dollar: the iPhone 14 will cost 10% more than the iPhone 13 and the two Pro models see their prices increase by 15% compared to that of their predecessors. Here are the prices as presented on the Apple website:
- iPhone 14: 1,019 euros for 128 GB; 1,149 euros for 256 GB and 1,409 euros for 512 GB;
- iPhone 14 Plus: 1,169 euros for 128 GB; 1,299 euros for 256 GB and 1,559 euros for 512 GB;
- iPhone 14 Pro: 1,329 euros for 128 GB; 1,459 euros for 256 GB; 1,719 euros for 512 GB and 1,979 euros for 1 TB;
- iPhone 14 Pro Max: 1,479 euros for 128 GB; 1,609 euros for 266 GB; 1,869 euros for 512 GB and 2,129 euros for 1 TB.
Design and new colors
In terms of design, the iPhone 14 resembles its predecessor, the iPhone 13 with flat edges and rounded corners that also recall that of the iPhone 4. The Cupertino company has worked on new colors for its iPhone 14 The purple hue already tested in spring 2021 on the iPhone 12 returns to Apple’s palette, on the other hand, blue will not be available on the iPhone 14 Pro but only on the 14 and 14 Plus. The colors planned by the apple firm are:
- iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in blue, mauve, midnight (black), starlight (white) and red;
- the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max in intense purple, gold, silver and space black.
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max vs. iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
Only the Pro versions of the iPhone 14 will accommodate certain new features such as the always-on screen, or even a new camera and dynamic island, a version with a modular display of the famous notch that appears on the brand’s smartphones. from the iPhone X. A new chip called A16 Bionic and a 48 megapixel rear camera equip the smartphone in Pro version. The basic iPhone 14 and its Plus version only offer an A15 chip, which is already present on the iPhone 13, in a revised and improved version. This is the first time that the Pro versions have a more powerful chip than the other versions. This is for Apple to reduce costs and absorb some of the supply issues.
Apple has therefore declined four versions of its iPhone 14 with an iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen, an iPhone 14 Pro also with a 6.1-inch screen, an iPhone 14 Pro Max with a 6-inch screen, 7 inches and a brand new version, the iPhone 14 Plus also with a 6.7 inch screen.
An extremely durable battery
In addition to screens of different sizes, they do not all have the same battery life:
- iPhone 14: 20 hours of video playback;
- iPhone 14 Pro: 23 hours of video playback;
- iPhone 14 Plus: 26 hours of video playback;
- iPhone 14 Pro Max: 29 hours of video playback.
According to the first tests, the batteries of the new iPhones are particularly efficient. the 01net website tested the iPhone 14’s versatile battery life and the iPhone 14 Plus smashes the competition at 27 hours and 35 minutes, ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 27 hours and 21 minutes. In video streaming autonomy, the iPhone 14s do much better than their competitors. The iPhone 14 Pro Max lasts 22 hours and 57 minutes, ahead of the iPhone 14 Plus and its 22 hours and 37 minutes. Next come the Galaxy Fold with 19 hours and 10 minutes and the Galaxy A42 4G with 18 hours and 14 minutes.
Crash detection and SOS by satellite
The SOS by satellite option, which was first presented on the Apple Watch Series 8, also integrates the new iPhone 14 models. It allows you to send a text message to help even in an area where network coverage is weak. or non-existent. This option, available in the United States and Canada, is coming to France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Ireland next December. Another option called accident detection makes it possible to notify the emergency services when a car accident takes place. The functionality must be further improved by Apple, the help was called while the wearers of these smartphones did not face road accidents but took place in rides like roller coasters reports the wall street journal.
No USB-C yet
The iPhone 14 is still not equipped with a USB-C port as required by European regulations for its charging. Apple’s Lightning system is still at work on the iPhone 14 even though some rumors indicated that the iPhone might no longer have a charging port at all and therefore recharge via MagSafe, Apple’s wireless charging system. Apple. This hypothesis was invalidated by Apple’s keynote. The USB-C port would therefore only arrive on iPhone 15 models from 2023.
