Solana, a blockchain competitor to Ethereum, has announced that it is getting into phones. The Saga will be compatible with everything that makes Web3, from cryptocurrencies to NFTs.
The phone is called Saga, and it could ” change everything “. This is Solana, Ethereum’s competitor blockchain, who says it – and it is also she who made the smartphone. The company has one ambition: to allow cryptos to be used and usable everywhere.
Solana presented the smartphone on June 23 at an event in New York. ” We spend our lives on our phones said Anatoly Yakovenko, the founder of Solana, during the presentation, “ except when it comes to Web3, because there hasn’t been a thought-for-mobility approach yet.”
Web3, a decentralized version of the internet designed for the blockchain, is at the center of many cryptocurrency projects – but it still requires, according to Anatoly Yakovenko, to log on to a computer. With Saga, Solana intends to remedy this problem.
A phone designed for crypto-currencies and NFTs
Saga will be available in early 2023, in the US, Canada, UK and Europe, and it will cost $1,000. It is already possible to pre-order it: you need to pay a deposit of 100 dollars, to be paid (of course) in cryptocurrency. Saga phones will run on Android, will be equipped with the chips Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and will have a 6.67-inch OLED screen, 12GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage. They will also have a 50-megapixel camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.
However, Solana is not going to build the telephones itself: the production is ensured by Osom, a company which in March unveiled photos of a new phone project, dubbed OV1, in ceramic and steel. Osom, who was contacted by The Vergeconfirmed that the OV1 project has now been transformed into a Saga.
But it is not these technical characteristics that will make the Sagas unique and truly compatible with Web3: it is the role of the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS). This is the other great novelty of the conference: the SMS is a software development kit for Android, which should make it possible to develop applications compatible with Web3. These applications are called dApps : decentralized apps, which work from smart contracts on blockchains (here, that of Solana).
The SMS must allow, in the long term, to create an entire ecosystem of dApps, which will then be downloadable in the Solanda dApp Store, the decentralized equivalent of the App Store. It is therefore SMS that will truly make Saga a special Web3 and NFT telephone. ” The Solana Mobile Stack and the Solana dApp Store will enable developers to create new experiences », explains the Saga site. It will thus be possible to create NFTs anywhere, anytime “, thanks to the secure transactions that will be implemented on the phones.
Magic Eden, Solana’s blockchain-based NFT selling platform, is a launch partner for Saga and has announced its support for the project. A Magic Eden dApp could therefore quickly see the light of day. The phone would also be compatible with the regular use of cryptocurrencies. Saga ensures that they will be safe thanks to the “Seed Vault” installed in the phones, which should make it possible to keep users’ private keys safe.
” The world needs new products that are compatible with the future said Jason Keats, the founder of Osom, referring to Web3. ” Building an ecosystem for the future is exciting. »
Although the project has been very warmly received in crypto circles, there is no guarantee that the model will work perfectly, or that it will be a success. The project is particularly ambitious and building a market for dApps from scratch will take time. The risk is to have, at least for the first time, a “Web3 phone” which would be no different from other Android phones.
We would love to give thanks to the writer of this article for this remarkable material
The first “Web3 smartphone”, what is that again?
