telegram icon app ipa iphone ipadThe CEO of Telegram seems upset with Apple’s practices. According to him, certain requirements with regard to other web browsers than Safari, present on iOS, are disproportionate. More clearly, they aim to weaken competition. Here are some explanations.

Apple doesn’t just make people happy

After announcing the arrival of a premium subscription on his platform just two days ago, the CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durovhas decided to continue to speak publicly on this Monday, June 13, 2022.

Via his own Telegram channel, he Explain that he was awaiting the results of certain investigations carried out by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Indeed, the English authority is currently checking certain operations related to the App Store, Apple’s application store.

More precisely, it is the obligation to go through a web browser under WebKit that poses a problem. Web browsers who wish to be present on iOS and therefore on the App Store are requested to use WebKit. As noted by the CEO of Telegram (and others), this usage limit would again be anti-competitive and prevent other browsers from competing, with Apple forcing Safari’s hand.

About the CMA:

Apple prohibits alternatives to its own browser on its mobile devices, an Apple-specific restriction. The CMA is concerned that this severely limits the potential for competing browsers to differentiate themselves from Safari (for example, on features such as speed and functionality) and limits Apple’s incentives to invest in its browser engine.

In other words, Apple oblige others to adapt to their system to prevent them from offering a better solution and therefore faster and more functional than Safari, the browser of the bitten apple. Words validated by Durov and judged to be in line with the current situation.

I think that’s an accurate summary [par la CMA] and I hope that regulatory measures will soon follow. It’s sad that, more than a decade after the death of Steve Job, a company that once revolutionized the mobile web has become his biggest obstacle.

A new attack on the App Store which continues to be criticized for many months. The entrepreneur did not stop there and went on to suspect Apple of purposely crippling web applications so that developers go through the App Store on iOS and, therefore, pay the famous 30% commission.

We suspect that Apple is intentionally crippling its web apps to force its users to download more native apps where Apple is able to charge its 30% commission.

Anyway, Apple must wait and will not hesitate to react immediately if the decision of the CMA does not go in its direction. A story that should once again take a long time to find a way out.
