How to use YouTube in the background on mobile?

How to play YouTube videos in the background while working on your mobile phone? Explanations in the following.

By subscribing to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, you can have YouTube videos playing in the background while using your mobile phone. But how do you get around this limitation if you don’t want to subscribe to a paid service on the platform? In this article, we’re going to show you some infallible tricks to enjoy the best of YouTube in multitasking.

YouTube Premium is a subscription service which offers ad-free viewing whether on computer or mobile phone. With this subscription, you will be able to access exclusive videos. This subscription will also allow you to download youtube videos without restriction. What’s more, it offers you the opportunity to let your videos play in the background even when multitasking. You can turn off the screen of your mobile device, your videos on the platform will continue to be broadcast.

To benefit from these various advantages, subscription to YouTube-Premium is €11.99 per month. You can still save money with the family subscription which costs €17.00 monthly for 6 devices with a free trial month. While paying for a subscription isn’t ideal, it’s the most convenient way to play YouTube in the background on your iPhone or Android phone.

If you want to use YouTube running in the background on your iPhone without going through the Premium subscription, using a browser is the only way to get there.

While turning off the screen and continuing to listen to YouTube is prohibited in Safari and Chrome, it is possible to use Apple’s Control Center with some other browsers to bypass YouTube restrictions. Firefox and Opera are two browsers that work perfectly with this method. Here’s how you can make this method work.

Step 1 : First, access YouTube from your browser of choice. If Google redirects you to the app from Firefox, try typing youtube.com directly into the URL bar.

2nd step : Next, search for the video of your choice.

Step 3: Once you find and open your video, switch to the desktop version of the site.

It depends on the browser you are using. You can access it usually by the Options button at the bottom right, then by the Desktop option.

Step 4: Launch your video. You may have to wait for the ads to stop.

Step 5: Now go back to your home screen. Your video should start playing in picture mode.

Step 6: You can leave the currently playing video in the PiP window. This will allow you to use your phone normally. It is also possible to drag it to the edge to hide it. Simply press the “x” button to close the window.

Although this method requires a few extra steps, it allows you to play YouTube videos in the background on your iPhone. The must is that you will not need to pay anything to be able to enjoy it!

Playing videos YouTube running in the background in Android can be done in Firefox in a manner similar to that described above for the iPhone. We tested this method for Firefox, but it might work on other browsers as well. If you’re using browsers that use Chrome as a base, you won’t be able to perform background playback. Indeed, Chrome had removed this option.

Step 1 : Launch Firefox as you normally would and go to the YouTube website. Type in the URL entry “youtube.com” to open the application.

2nd step : Navigate to the video you want to play in the background.

Step 3: Access the Settings menu by tapping on the three dots in the lower right corner of the window. Next, tap “Ask” on the desktop.

Step 4: Start playing the video, then swipe up to close your browser.

Step 5: Your video should continue playing and appear in the notification area.

You have to believe that theusing PiP mode seems like a cheat because it’s not an app. With Android 8.0 Oreo, it is possible to activate the “PiP mode” automatically. A thumbnail preview window will appear if you navigate away from YouTube. This window can be positioned anywhere on the screen. You can expand it by tapping on it to access the playback controls.

Previously, this feature was only available to Premium subscribers. But in 2018, Google started offering this feature on YouTube to non-subscribers. The only condition is that you are in the United States. However, it does not provide access to musical content. Therefore you will always have to subscribe to be able to display YouTube in the background while going about your business.

Not sure which version of Android your phone uses? Just go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version. Note that to be able to activate this feature, you will have at least Android 8.0 Oreo. Since Oreo is over five years old, chances are your phone is running that version or a much newer one.
