These characters who make history
If this series is also cult, it is mainly thanks to certain characters like Lady Violet, Lady Mary or even Charles Carson. Focus on the key figures of the series.
Violet Crawley is the Countess of Grantham. She is the mother of Lord Grantham and grandmother of Lady Mary, Lady Edith and Lady Sibyl. Endowed with a strong character and very attached to good manners and traditions, Lady Violet is totally devoted to Robert, her son. However, the latter maintains sometimes tumultuous relations with her stepdaughter.
If we had to choose one thing we like best about Lady Violet, it would be, without a doubt, her acerbic humor.
Count Robert Crawley
The Lord of Grantham is the father of Mary, Edith and Sibyl. He devoted his entire life to the estate. Married to Cora, a rich American, the couple live a true love story despite their arranged marriage. When the Crawley family loses its heirs following the sinking of the Titanic, the Earl has no choice but to marry his eldest daughter to a distant cousin if he wants to keep the estate. It was without counting on the strong character of Lady Mary…
Eldest daughter of Robert and Cora Crawley, Lady Mary is a discreet, mysterious woman who can seem cold at first sight. Yet Mary Crawley is a generous person and for whom family is probably the most important thing there is. Very close to Lady Violet, her grandmother, Lady Mary nevertheless makes her see all the colors.
Originally, Tom Branson is the family driver. The latter has a real passion for politics, and in particular the Socialist Party. Although he works for the Crawleys, Tom Branson hates aristocrats. However, as he talks with Sibyl, especially about politics, they fall in love. But if the two marry, Tom Branson struggles to break away from the image of a driver in the eyes of his in-laws.
Charles Carson is the (slightly old-fashioned) family butler. It is he who watches over all the male servants. Having never really developed his personal life, the latter is entirely devoted to his employers. Very close to Lady Mary, he plays the role of father figure to her.
Madame Hughes is the steward of Downton Abbey. It is she who takes care of the female staff who work in the field. Quite severe in nature, Elsie Hugues is nonetheless fair. She too has devoted her whole life to the Crawley family but, unlike the butler, Mrs Hughes is sometimes nostalgic for the life she did not have.
