The Samsung Galaxy S23 will be equipped with Qualcomm’s new mobile chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. But the Korean manufacturer’s high-end phone could have a more muscular version than that of the competition.
Like every year, Qualcomm unveils its new flagship processor which will equip high-end smartphones for the next 12 months. The future Galaxy S23 are part of this list. But Samsung could have the first of a “boosted” version of the most powerful chip available on Android.
An “overclocked” version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from Samsung
Samsung will not lift the veil on its next high-end smartphones until the beginning of 2023, but many indiscretions are already bringing interesting details. Thus, we have an idea of the design of the Galaxy S23or even the photo quality of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Today, it is the chip that will drive the heart of future phones that interests us: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
Announced by Qualcomm with a 35% faster processor than the previous generation and a 25% more powerful graphics part, the SoC (System on a Chip) presents itself as a beast of competition. The chip has already made an appearance on the Geekbench benchmark, displaying clock frequencies in line with those indicated by Qualcomm: 3.2 GHz for the main CPU core and 680 MHz for the GPU.
Samsung’s special edition Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (we don’t know its official name yet) CPU 3.2GHz→3.36GHz. Surprisingly, the GPU is also increased from 680MHz to 719MHz

On the other hand, the same chip presents significantly different figures on the benchmarks of the Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra: 3.36 GHz for the CPU and 719 MHz for the GPU, suggesting an “overclocked” version. Enough to further improve the performance of this new generation of chip which, remember, is, like the previous generation, engraved in 4 nm.
Qualcomm has already done this
It wouldn’t be the first time that Qualcomm has offered an “overclocked” version, however. We remember for example the “AC” version of the Snapdragon 855 which designates a doped version of the chip: the aptly named Snapdragon 855+ (SM8150-AC).
The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 having the name “SM8550-AB”, the Galaxy S23 chip could be the “SM8550-AC” version. Impossible for the moment to say whether or not this version of the SoC will be called “Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2”, but Qualcomm and TSMC (the founder) seem to have succeeded in pushing the chip a little further.
The battle of the processors that equip our mobiles promises to be exciting. A few days before Qualcomm, MediaTek, one of its main rivals, unveiled a very promising new Dimensity 9200 SoC. Healthy competition that pushes the limits of our Android smartphones which will benefit from new technologies from 2023.
