Good news for jobs: 1 million jobs should be created by 2030, according to the report Professions in 2030 published jointly by France Stratégie and the DARES (Directorate for the coordination of research, studies and statistics). This study, which is based on a nomenclature of 83 professional families, meets a dual objective: anticipate the recruitment needs of employers between 2019 and 2030 in different professions “while providing” clarification of the potential imbalances between these recruitment needs and the number of young people entering the labor market in each profession “.

An attractive and dynamic sector in a context of digital transformation

The digital sector should remain very attractive during the current decade. Skilled trades in business services, including engineering-related activities, are in 2nd position among the top 10 sectors where job growth is expected to be the strongest by 2030. More 201,000 jobs should be filled in the next 8 years. In detail, the computer engineering professions should make it possible to create 115,000 additional jobs by 2030, an increase of 26% compared to 2019. By compensating for the 75,000 departures at the end of their careers calculated by the two organizations , DARES and France Stratégie estimate that a total of 190,000 new jobs should be created in this branch.

Their growth results not only from the dynamic specific to these sectors and the overall performance of the economy, but also from a specific demand for these professionals, in the context of a digital transformation – accentuated by the intensification of teleworking ( collaborative communication, virtualization) – and environmental, which increases the need for scientific skills in all activities.

It should be noted that computer engineering should welcome 143,000 young graduates by 2030 compared to 12,000 without a baccalaureate level. With 120,000 new jobs created, young talent should represent 96% of these new workforces.

A profession that remains in tension by 2030, training to the rescue

Despite these encouraging figures, the DARES and France Strategy want to alert the various players: companies, which will have strong recruitment needs in the years to come, but also training organizations so that they adapt their programs. The post of computer engineer is one of the 4 professions for which the current tensions could continue between now and 2030. These can be generated by many factors, such as imbalances between supply and demand, or the need for specific technical skills that require initial or continuous training to exercise it.

Nearly 40% of businesses show a weak partial imbalance and would therefore see the current tensions continue in 2030 if no action is taken. For about half of these trades with a strong training-employment link, increasing the training offer seems to be able to help reduce current tensions: this is particularly the case (…) for computer engineers (…). In the medium term, current training capacities seem capable of meeting recruitment needs.

Difficulties in retaining IT talent

To complement the results of this report, another study conducted by Gartner reveals the difficulties companies have in retaining their talent once they have been hired. The consultancy surveyed 1,755 IT professionals from 40 countries, out of a total of 18,000 employees, during the 4th quarter of 2021. Globally, less than 3 in 10 employees in this sector wish to remain within of their business (29.1%). This figure rises to 38.8% for Europe. To address this, Gartner notes that “ more flexible, human-centric work policies can reduce attrition and increase performance “. Among the tracks to be adopted by CIOs are:

  • More flexible working hours with adapted schedules for each employee, even in some cases the implementation of a 4-day week,
  • A hybrid working mode, where employees are recognized as able to be fully productive even remotely, while certain activities that may require collaboration and exchanges are more conducive to returning to the office,
  • The end of face-to-face meeting worship thanks to collaborative toolswhich make it possible to follow meetings in synchronous or asynchronous mode, while not harming the decision-making or the creativity of all the members.

CIOs who embrace a human-centric approach to work will hire, retain and outperform those who revert to industrial-age work paradigms, says Graham Waller, vice president and analyst at Gartner.
