Ikonisys signs a research activity contract with Politecnico di Milano, a world-leading science and technology public university in the field of computer science and bioengineering

PARIS, May 24, 2022–(BUSINESSWIRE)–Regulatory News:

Ikonisys SA (Paris:ALIKO) (ISIN Code: FR00140048X2 / Mnemonic: ALIKO)a company specializing in the early and accurate detection of cancers using a unique fully automated solution for medical diagnostic laboratories, and the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) of the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), a world-class scientific institution committed to cutting-edge research, training and technology transfer, announced the signing of a research contract and the launch of a project aimed at solving the demanding problem of the identification of specific cells in complex tissues by designing, training and deploying a model of deep learning able to detect these cells.

POLIMI is an international leader in the field of informatics and bioengineering and was recently ranked 1er in Italy and 13and in the world in the field of engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

Professor Giacomo Boracchi from DEIB will lead the research bringing his expertise in image processing and machine learning. In particular, the approach will aim to recognize specific clinically relevant cells in darkfield images of lung tissue acquired from the Ikoniscope20. Segmentation of single cell nuclei is a frequent challenge in microscopy image processing, and is often the first step in many quantitative data analysis pipelines.

The ongoing collaboration will allow Ikonisys to further enhance its advanced image analysis capabilities and accelerate the development of the Ikoniscope AI project with the implementation of deep learning as well as new state-of-the-art techniques for the operational tasks of the instrument, leading to the development of new applications or the improvement of existing ones, especially in the most demanding areas such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs).

Professor Giacomo Boracchi, from DEIB by Politecnico di Milano said : “We are delighted to be able to work with Ikonisys on such a challenging subject as the detection of nuclei in tissue samples, which perfectly matches our expertise in image processing and machine learning. Systematic collaborations with the industrial sector are of strategic importance to DEIB and, as several previous projects have demonstrated, they often lead to significant industrial results.

Dr. Michael Kilpatrick, scientific director of Ikonisys, added : “We are delighted to work with a world-class institution such as DEIB of Politecnico di Milano. The possibility of benefiting from their cutting-edge expertise in AI and deep learning to develop new methods of identification and analysis of clinically relevant cells provides Ikonisys with the opportunity to continue to improve its image analysis proficiency, which will enhance the capabilities of the Ikoniscope20 for fully automated diagnostic analysis as well as expand the Company’s product portfolio by increasing the number and detail of fabrics for which applications can be developed.”

About Politecnico di Milano

The Politecnico di Milano is a science and technology public university that trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The university has always emphasized the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with businesses and the productive world through experimental research and technology transfer. Research has always been linked to didactics and this is a priority commitment that has allowed Politecnico Milano to obtain high quality results at an international level and to associate the university with the business world. Research constitutes a path parallel to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system. Knowing the world in which we are going to work is an essential condition for the training of students. By referring to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated to follow new paths and meet the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases favored by the Fondazione Politecnico and by the consortia to which Politecnico belongs, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.

About DEIB

The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) aims to be a world-class scientific institution committed to cutting-edge research, education and technology transfer in the fields of computer science and engineering , electronics, electrical engineering, systems and control, telecommunications and bioengineering.

DEIB’s vision is to promote the quality and impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on society at the national and international level, by pursuing excellent long-term interdisciplinary research and engaging in innovation, technology transfer and education. Although it is not easy to predict the future use of information, the next decade will certainly see even more dramatic changes as ICTs find new ways to invade people’s lives. In this scenario, the DEIB relies on four strong pillars:

  • A tradition of excellence in basic research, with a clear vision of its role and mission to “invent the future”;

  • A growing commitment to interdisciplinary research, as required by the ubiquity of information technologies in all scientific and technological fields;

  • A commitment to teaching in the challenging context of a rapidly changing discipline, balancing stable fundamentals with tumultuous changes in models, languages, technologies and standards;

  • A commitment to applied research and technology and knowledge transfer, through joint research projects with local and international industry and numerous spin-off activities.
