Artificial intelligence: definition
Artificial intelligence covers a broad spectrum. Initially, it is to Alan Turing that we owe the birth of artificial intelligence when in 1950, he wonders if machines are capable of thinking. He mentions the term artificial intelligence in an article ” Computing Machinery and Intelligence“. Subsequently, he invents the Turing test. Artificial intelligence therefore simulates real/human intelligence in a general way. However, over time, other experts have expressed their ideas around artificial intelligence to try to define it better.
For example, Stuart Russell (highly renowned computer engineer) and peter norvig (research scientist) believe that artificial intelligence rests on four important foundations around reasoning and behavior:
- human thought;
- Rational thinking;
- Human action;
- Rational action.
Other definitions exist and come modernize artificial intelligence concept. Thus, it is: machines that respond to simulations like humans, with a capacity for contemplation, judgment and intention”. Machines can make decisions in place of a human, endowed with extensive expertise in a particular area. We attribute three qualities of artificial intelligenceunder this definition:
Artificial intelligence: between deep and automatic learning
But then, how does artificial intelligence work to imitate human behavior? Artificial intelligence is based on two essential techniques :
- the machine learning or themachine learning ;
- the deep learning or thedeep learning.
Machine learning comes from bigdata. This is a technique that allows machines to learn behaviors without having been programmed to do so first. For this to work, the machines are fed with data that they will study, analyze without human intervention and use to react. They therefore rely on the repetitions they observe in the data in order to be able to anticipate reactions based on statistics. Machine learning is used in particular in banking, social networks and also CRM platforms.
Deep learning, on the other hand, is a branch of machine learning. This technique is based on the diagram of human neurons, in network and in layers. The information received then travels from artificial neurons to artificial neurons. When a neuron reacts to information, its surrounding network is activated because there is a “connection”. This is what allows artificial intelligence to refine its research and to enrich itself with its good answers and its bad answers. The system will compare its treatment with human responses and offer results that are ever closer to reality. This is the case, for example, when a machine must recognize a face in a photo. Thousands of data will be transmitted to it “types of faces, possible skin colors, views from all angles, with or without hair, dark or lighted, etc.) but also other objects, shapes, so that the machine can distinguish the face from other things. Deep learning is used in particular in facial, voice and image recognition.
Artificial intelligence: a science suitable for all fields
So what is artificial intelligence actually used for? This complements human expertise in several areas. In particular, it allowsautomate certain daily tasks, offer personalized and unique experiences to users.
For example, you can use special applications that allow you to follow your treatments, remind you when to take your medication, how often. Moreover, artificial intelligence can even analyze medical examinations (MRI, scanner) and detect any abnormalities.
