“A place for everyone and everyone in their place” : this is the message that the city of Nice wishes to convey by launching an experiment on Saturday to put an end to incivility on cycle paths. A new project in France, entitled “Safe City” and using artificial intelligence. The latter was unveiled with great fanfare this Friday at the Urban Supervision Center (CSU), in the presence of several elected officials, including the first deputy mayor for security, Anthony Borré, and some cycling associations and neighborhood representatives.

Until now, the video verbalization in Nice relied only on the watchful eye of 20 municipal agents of the CSU, responsible for continuously scrutinizing the images transmitted by some 3,900 cameras. But also on the reporting of local residents noting violations – 90,000 calls per year on average. The integration of an artificial intelligence system on these cameras is therefore intended to strengthen surveillance and support CSU agents in their mission of remote verbalization.

In fact, this innovative tool, created by the French company Wintics Cityvision, and which is already used by the municipality in the context of car counting, is able to detect 100% of vehicles, from vans to two-wheelers, which would obstruct a cycle path. After one minute, if the vehicle has not resumed its journey, an alert will be sent in real time to CSU agents, who can immediately report the offense and draw up a report, the amount of which is fixed. at 135 euros. “Technology is here put at the service of the human. It’s not robotic at all. We do not verbalize without raising doubtswarns Anthony Borré. There are of course special cases. Someone who comes to drop off a disabled or sick person and who stays for more than a minute will not necessarily be fined. It will be up to each agent to act accordingly.”

Zero tolerance for delivery vehicles

No tolerancewill not however be granted to delivery vehicles, warns Gaël Nofri, the deputy mayor in charge of transport. “About twenty vehicles are taken to the pound daily for having parked in the delivery spaces. There is therefore no reason that delivery people should not be penalized if they park on cycle paths.

For the time being, the system has not been deployed throughout the city, but only in nine areas of interest on the new cycle paths of the green network: the Durante/Congrès and Buffa/Dante axes, and connected to six cameras. Tested for a month, it has so far triggered around 40 alerts per day.

However, the town hall does not hide its ambition to develop the tool on the 73 km of cycle paths in the city if the results of the experiment prove conclusive. And even to widen the field of use of the device, which is already able to detect red lights not respected or even the prohibited use of the lanes. “It is a solution that will bring the city of Nice a plus in securing our cycle paths, in our policy of combating incivility and improving traffic flow”, assures Anthony Borré. Signs indicating the presence of the system will also be installed on the cycle paths concerned.
