Bulgari and Refik Anadol offer an immersive exhibition unique in the world

Bulgari and multimedia artist Refik Anadol are thinking big for the second act of Serpenti Metamorphosis. A year after their collaboration on the Piazza del Duomo, in Milan, they unveil an immersive work stimulating the senses in an unprecedented way, in London. The Serpenti appeared for the first time in the Bulgari collections in 1948, on watch straps. Since then, it has become its emblematic animal, constantly renewed, redesigned, sublimated by the creative spirit and the exceptional know-how of the artisans of the Roman House.Serpenti, digital art and artificial intelligenceTo announce the 75th anniversary of Serpenti, Bulgari has chosen to make an impression by inviting the internationally renowned digital artist, Refik Anadol, to pass this precious motif through the filter of digital art and artificial intelligence. The result for this second chapter of Serpenti Metamorphosis? A stunning new variation of a mutating snake, on display until 23 December 2022 at the renowned Saatchi Gallery, London. We discover a large cube in which we can enter, opening onto an immersive experience unique in the world. Thanks to the artificial intelligence and the genius spirit of Anadol, each visitor can see, smell and hear a new interpretation of the Serpenti, of a rare dream. 200 million images processed for this projectThis new joint project was initiated by Bulgari, which has been close to the artist for several years, as Laura Burdese, Chief marketing officer for the House, tells us: “We knew that metamorphosis was at the heart Refik’s work, which is very inspired by nature. And he has the same vision of the snake as Bulgari: wise, moving, hypnotic, powerful. It was a perfect match”. Refik Anadol (exhibited at Art Basel Miami, at the Center Pompidou in Paris, at the Venice Biennale or at the Moma in New York), saw in this proposal a stimulating creative opportunity. “I have the same philosophy of perfection as that of Bulgari. For me, this applies to artificial intelligence. I spend months working on the codes, the data, sorting them, cleaning them, transforming them…like Bulgari with its jewellery,” he laughs when we meet. To thrill our senses, Refik Anadol has applied increasingly sophisticated algorithms to more than 200 million images of nature and flowers. A real technical feat. “You are in a dream machine” “The bar was set very high, I had to surpass myself. I have been working on immersive pieces for more than 10 years, but I had never reached such a level of modernity. We have downloaded absolutely all existing flower species, not one has escaped us! You are in a dream machine. Even music and perfume are created by technology”. The experience extends into the real world of the London gallery, through an exclusive selection of Serpenti pieces, from jewelery and watches dating from the 1940s to the most recent creations. of the Roman jeweller. The installation is enriched with archival images and sketches of Bulgari Serpenti, which interact with the creations on display illustrating the continuous evolution of this icon. the most recognizable motif in Bulgari creations, it also embodies the House’s key values. “The snake changes its skin constantly. Perpetual metamorphosis is a deeply rooted concept at Bulgari. We evolve and look straight to the future, while respecting what has been bequeathed to us. “recalls Laura Burdese. A vision shared by Lucia Silvestri, designer and artistic director of Bulgari. “We are committed to innovating, moving forward, dazzling even more thanks to the Serpenti, while remaining faithful to what it is. A powerful animal closely linked to the female universe.” For the Serpenti’s 75th anniversary celebrations, announced in 2023, Lucia promises “several events where new creations will be unveiled. “We work on skin, on stones and new materials. It will be very innovative, ”she slips in conclusion, refraining from revealing more. Can’t wait for next year.> The exhibition will take place at the Saatchi Gallery in London until December 23, 2022 in gallery n° 3.
